What is being decided?

Concerns have been raised regarding public safety for pedestrians using the track that provides access to Glen Point, Beachport. Council is seeking community feedback on the proposal to close the beach access track to vehicular traffic to improve public safety.

Background

At the Council Meeting held on 14 February 2023, Council considered a letter that raised concerns for public safety of pedestrians using the track that provides both walkers and vehicles access to Glen Point, Beachport. The letter suggested that the track be closed to all vehicles. Council resolved at the meeting to undertake public consultation on the proposal to close the beach access along the Beachport Boatyard to vehicular traffic to improve public safety.

The track is currently sign posted for 4WD vehicles only, it is narrow and does not provide traffic with two-way movement or pedestrians with space to safely avoid vehicles navigating the soft sand that covers the track. This is the only option for accessing this beach via a vehicle.

The Beachport Boatyard Manager has been asked to provide comment on the concerns which formed part of the report. The Boatyard Manager shared the same concerns for public safety of pedestrians using this track and additionally, highlighted serious concerns regarding vehicles parking on the slip from the boatyard. The full report as presented to Council can be viewed in the Agenda, Item 15.4.1 Beach Access - Glen Point Beachport.
