What is being decided?

Council is seeking community feedback on the preferred location for a public art installation, being a large craypot, in the seaside township of Beachport. Following assessment of several suggested sites, four potential locations have been identified and a preference needs to be determined.

Background

Council has acquired a large craypot sculpture from a local primary school in Millicent. The craypot was one of two that had been installed in a nature playground within the school grounds but were assessed as being unsafe for use as play equipment.

The school offered them to Council (and/or community groups) who may want to install them as public artwork, as they wouldn’t have to meet the same standards as playground equipment. The first was secured by the Southend Progress Association and with the assistance of Council, installed at the entrance to the town (See image above right).

The second craypot was secured by Council for installation in Beachport. Council has received feedback from both the Beachport Public Art Committee and the Beachport District Development Association, whom have both proposed several options for placement of the installation. Following assessment of those options, four have been deemed appropriate, including:

Option 1: Surf Beach Car Park
The sculpture and concrete slab would be installed between the entrance and exit to the car park on the grass area.
Option 2: Beach Road and Millicent Road Intersection
The sculpture and concrete slab would be installed on the lawn areas in front of the Beachport Caravan Park.
Option 3: Millicent Road adjacent the Visitor Information Centre
The sculpture and concrete slab would be installed between the shared path and road under the existing streetlight.
Option 4: Centennial Park (Corner of Sargeant and Chambers Streets)
The sculpture would be installed on the existing concrete slab as shown in the image above.

At its meeting held on 12 December 2023, Council decided to seek feedback on the preferred location through public consultation, prior to the installation of the craypot either by Council or an appropriate community group/organisation.

This consultation is now CLOSED.

Feedback was received until 5 pm on Wednesday, 28 February 2024.

What's next?

At it's meeting held on 12 March 2024 Council approved the location of the craypot at the intersection of Beach Road and Millicent Road, and will now advise the Beachport District Development Association that the appropriate development approval can be sought to allow for the installation in this location.
