Consultation has concluded

What was being decided?

Council was seeking community feedback on the proposed location of the temporary skip bins provided as part of Beachport’s Tourist Waste initiative in the 2023 April holiday period.

Two potential locations were identified with improved accessibility and safety:

  • Site 1: Council Beachport Depot - North West Terrace, Beachport or
  • Site 2: Beachport Recreational Centre - Golf Course Road, Beachport.

The skip bin services would be present from Friday 7th April to Monday 1st May 2023 inclusive.

Background

Over previous year Council had trialled various skip bin services to address the excess waste in Beachport over busy holiday periods. These services have previously all been located at the Beachport Visitor Information Centre, Millicent Road. The trials had increasing uptake by visitors to Beachport. Council determined that the service would be required in April to manage the influx of visitors. Learnings from the trials indicated that the skip bin services would be better suited at a different location and Council decided to seek feedback through public consultation.

Site 1: Council Beachport Depot - North West Terrace, Beachport or
Site 2: Beachport Recreational Centre - Golf Course Road, Beachport.

The result

During the engagement period 101 individuals viewed the online survey for this project and 39 survey responses were received. No hard copy surveys or correspondence was received prior to the end of consultation. Based on the responses received ‘Site 1’ being Council’s Beachport Depot - North West Terrace, Beachport was the most supported option.

Council will proceed with arrangements to locate the skip bins at Council’s Beachport Depot - North West Terrace, Beachport for the period of Friday 7th April and removal on Monday 1st May 2023.

Brief summary of results:

  • ‘Site 1’ Council Beachport Depot - North West Tce, Beachport received the following responses; 56.8% supportive, 21.6% neutral and 21.6% opposing.
  • ‘Site 2’ Beachport Recreational Centre - Golf Course Rd, Beachport received responses; 30.8% supportive, 10.3% neutral and 59% opposing.

Context provided for Site 1 Council Beachport Depot being supported had reoccurring mentions of increased surveillance from Council staff, higher convenience and visibility for caravaners/4WD’s going to and from Lake George. Individuals also mentioned Site 1 as their preferred location as it is further away from recreational open spaces in the case of illegal dumping occurring.
