Council previously held two community sessions, the first in June 2022 and then another in February 2023, to discuss concerns with the Southend Coastal Erosion. These sessions addressed Councils position with adaptation strategies for the areas that are being impacted, including the Southend Caravan Park.

A report was then presented to Council in February 2023, which included the community feedback on the pathways to take to deal with this erosion following the second consultation session.

Council was then successful in obtaining funding from the Coastal Protection Board to relocate sand from west beach to the areas at risk of erosion, these works were completed in March of 2024. This was a temporary solution as Council were aware that this would eventually be impacted and erode.

After major storms rolled into Southend across the months of September and October resulting in significant erosion in the Limestone Coast, specifically resulting in loss of all the sand placed previously in front of the caravan park.

Council have engaged with FSC Range to complete modelling and provide us with a report to take to Council in October 2024. From this meeting Council resolved to the following;

  1. Conduct further consultation with Southend community in relation to the findings and recommendations of the FSC Range technical assessment
  2. Authorise the CEO to negotiate a revised lease area and fee structure for Southend Caravan Park due to the further erosion of the park coastal boundary
  3. Authorise the CEO to apply to the Coastal Protection Board to undertake detailed design and seek development approval (budget $50K)
  4. Approve a budget variation of $18,000 to allow for fencing and beach works in vicinity of Southend Caravan Park.

Council is now holding it's third community session on coastal erosion management at Southend and are inviting further community feedback.
