Young people can make a difference by embracing good waste management practices and leading a cultural shift in waste reduction and recycling attitudes and behaviours.

This competition is an opportunity for participants to learn about, plan around and become an influencer in waste and recycling.

Young residents of Wattle Range Council aged 12-25 years of age are encouraged to produce short videos detailing how to deal with some of the ‘problem’ waste items currently used by the youth of the region. A total pool of $3,000 prize money is up for grabs across multiple categories.

It is envisaged that these videos could then be used by Council in a wider public education campaign either by social media or television advertising.

How to Enter

1. Choose a theme

Select one of the following tricky waste items as the topic for your entry:

Green Organics Category

a. Compostable cups, cutlery, tissues, paper straws, food waste.
b. Takeaway packaging and leftovers.
c. Stationary for schoolwork i.e. pencils, shredded paper can go in green organics.
d. Pencils, lunch box left overs can go in green organics.

Study Recyclables Category

a. Stationary (e.g. text books, metal or plastic rulers, notebooks, pens, pencils, sticky notes).
b. E-waste (e.g. calculators, batteries, laptops, charging cords).

Tricky Drop-offs Category

a. E-waste (e.g. hair dryers/curlers, mobile phone, batteries and chargers or games consoles).
b. Cosmetics (e.g. deodorant cans, shampoo/soap bottles, cosmetic containers).
c. Bottles and their lids (e.g. energy & soft drinks).

2. Do your research

Why is your tricky waste theme an issue? Visit Council’s website and/or the Which Bin website to find out how your item(s) of tricky waste are best dealt with.

3. Plan your message

What are the tricky waste items you plan to focus on and what information do your peers need to know about how to use good waste management practices to reduce or recycle them? How will you convey this information?

4. Record your video

Record a short video (30 seconds to a minute) that will influence your audience to change their attitude and behaviours around your chosen tricky waste theme. Your video can be filmed on any camera (phone, DSLR, Drone etc). Remember to have any ‘cast members’ under the age of 18 complete a Release Form which will need to be submitted with your entry.

5. Submit your entry

Prizes

First prize will be awarded in each category. Prize money as follows:

  • Green Organics category winning video $750
  • Recyclables category winning video $750
  • Tricky Drop-Offs category winning video $1,500
